What's All This Then?

Greetings!

This blog has run its course, as it were. Actually three courses, but don't let that stop you from reading. Here's the skinny: I dedicated most of 2008 to running and fundraising for cancer research. On June 1, I ran the San Diego Rock n' Rock marathon. On June 21 I ran a half marathon in Anchorage, Alaska. Both of these feats were tackled with the coaching and support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, for which I raised $5,725. The final challenge was the New York City marathon on Nov. 2. This time I trained with "Fred's team" on behalf of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where I was treated successfully for Hodgkins lymphoma five years ago. I raised another $3240 (maybe more).

It was a banner year in many ways. I celebrated 5 years of health. I raised a lot of money. I earned a Team in Training triple crown for completing a triathlon, century bike ride and marathon. I was featured on a show about three first time runners in the NYC marathon, aired on NBC in New York. And ....

You can read all about my journey in sneakers below. And remember:
"A journey of 26.2 miles begins with a single shlep."

Packing It In

I got out the ol' suitcase and starting packing. It's a little early, but I wanted to desensitive Dooley who reacts poorly to its presence and also give myself time to take out tomorrow half of what I pack today. I threw in a bathing suit on the theory that I'm not going to be getting a massage, but I can at least hit the pool or whirlpool. I have to check to see if there's a sauna or steam room. Wouldn't mind ducking into that a few times over the weekend.

I wrote to Andy, a cycling teammate and the only person I know in San Diego, to ask for advice about places to eat and hang out near the hotel. I invited him to come and cheer for me (I'll be wearing purple, I told him helpfully), although his wife is 8 months pregnant and they may have other ideas for ways to spend Sunday morning. As for today's nutrition, I'm packing it in there, too. I told my friend John that I started out with the breakfast of champions: cold sesame noodles and coffee. Lunch consisted of a salad with craisins, walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette and a half a bagel with lox for maximum salt intake and mozzarella. It's unorthodox, I know, but I had to improvise because I didn't have any cream cheese. Might as well use up the mozz.

What's for dinner, you ask? There's a mentor dinner tonight at Osso Buco after this, our last practice for the San Diego team. I might make an appearance. We'll see.

I'm compiling my list of food to pack, too. There's race day food, of course, but that's the easy part. I've got to bring other stuff because I want to be able to graze all weekend, as is my habit and I don't want to be forced to resort to really crummy airport food. One thing is for sure: I'll be packing lollipops.
